DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
The building is located in the north of the city at the foot of the Parioli mountains. It stands on 30,000 m² of land and can accommodate up to 12,000 worshipers. It is the work of the architect Paolo Portoghesi, assisted by Vittorio Gigliotti, Sami Mousawi and Nino Tozzo. the architectural project seeks an encounter with local history and tradition (use of materials that recall the typical Roman ones, such as travertine and cottorosato). It is inspired by more than one mosque model: the "forest" model, characteristic of the Maghreb and the Great Mosque of Cordoba, in southern Spain; that of the mosque and that of the Persian mosque, In the structure, well integrated in the surrounding greenery emerges a combination of modern thought of the structure and omnipresent curved lines (the great prayer hall undoubtedly recalls a forest - or an oasis, with its columns three stems), the use of light to create a meditative climate. The decorative apparatus, very discreet in the amplitude of the space that contains it, is made up of glazed ceramics of delicate colors. The repeated Koranic theme is "Allah is light".
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
The great mosque of Rome has a particular historical relevance as it was built in the center of the Christian-Catholic Papacy and in the capital of a state that has played an important role in the relations between the West and the East, compared to the Mediterranean and the relationship between Christianity and Islam. The building was financed by King Faysal of Saudi Arabia, whose authority has a strong religious significance for the Muslim world as the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques of Mecca and Medina. Its construction took over twenty years: in 1974 the land was approved by the Roman Municipal Council; the first stone was laid in 1984, with the presence of the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini; the inauguration took place in June 1995.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
