Wat Buddhapadipa is a Thai Buddhist temple in Wimbledon, London. Wimbledon is a very diverse area in terms race, religion and cultures. It was the first such temple to be built in the United Kingdom. It is home to monks and nuns, but welcomes visitors of any faith to view the grounds and temple as long as they are respectful. The Buddhapadipa Temple is a Buddhist centre. It is affiliated to the Royal Thai Embassy in London. It was officially inaugurated by their Majesties, the King and Queen of Thailand on the 1 August 1966, when it was at 99 Christchurch Rd, East Sheen, London SW14. Its aim and objectives are to disseminate the teaching of the Buddha in the Theravada tradition. The Temple is open to all people regardless of race, creed, religion, nationality, age and sex. In 1975, the Working-Committee in Bangkok decided to purchase the present premises, formerly known as Barrogill, and the Temple moved to Wimbledon from East Sheen in November 1976.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
Every 1st Saturday of the month, the Buddhapadipa Temple provides the environment for experienced meditators who would like to deepen their meditation practice. The retreat starts at 10 am until 4 pm. No talk and instruction are given by the teachers. All meditators do walking and sitting meditation under their own individual guidance. People from all walks of life take part in this meditation activity.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
Buddhism is becoming popular in western countries for a number of reasons, The first good reason is Buddhism has answers to many of the problems in modern materialistic societies. It also includes (for those who are interested) a deep understanding of the human mind (and natural therapies) which prominent psychologists around the world are now discovering to be both very advanced and effective. Throughout the year the temple welcomes many schools and other groups to the peaceful setting of the Temple located in Wimbledon common area. Groups come for guided tours of their beautiful grounds and the Main Temple (with Buddha Statutes and mural paintings).
