DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
The mausoleum of Gaazi Baba is a heptagonal structure build from stone and hedges. Above the entrance there is an Arabic inscription telling that Balaban Mehmed - an Islamic saint, humble and pure as an angel, is buried here. Up to this day Muslim and Christian pilgrims visit the sanctuary to touch his relics and find seek cure for their ailments. The holy place is a bright example of religious and ethnic tolerance. The sanctuary can be visited from April to November. It is accessible by car. There is a dirt road, starting from Ryahovtsi village.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
The legend presents Gaazi Baba as a handsome warrior with incredible strength. The name "Gaazi" means hero. The soldier was wounded in the Crimean war and headed back to his home village. He fell in a chasm where a Bulgarian found him. This was Choban Valko - a gentle shepherd, known for his healing powers. For two months, the Christian watched over the Muslim and he managed to cure him. From this point on, the two were inseparable and became blood brothers. The locals started to regard Gaazi and Valko as holy men. The two brothers devoted themselves to healing the poor and the suffering. Their fame grew and many did seek their help. Since then, the hillside of Ryahovtsi has become a sacred place, honored by Christians and Muslim alike. The healers' legacy of ethnic and religious tolerance is transmitted to the generations up to the present day.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
The site is famous for its healing powers. It is a refuge for people of all confessions. The annual Hacet Bayramı feast gathers thousands of people from the whole country and abroad. Both Christian and Muslim volunteers take part in the preparation of the feast. The Bulgarian Grand Mufti is often among the guests of honour.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
Every year thousands of people seek a cure for their mental and physical pain at the sacred place. From early dawn they herd to the tomb to touch the relics of Gaazi Baba. Traditionally on Hacet Bayramı students from the local villages sing religious songs. The religious leaders of the community head prayers for fertility prosperity. There is also a traditional rainmaking ceremony.
