DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
Ensemble avec Marie includes Catholic and Muslim representatives of organisations, or just believers, who are gathered around the figure of Mary. An international committee meets twice a year and supports local initiatives. Local organisation committees, including Muslims and Christians, meet many times throughout the year to prepare the meetings. These meetings are a chance to embody fraternity. Ensemble avec Marie has local organisations in 25 cities but also around the world (in Belgium, Niger, DR Congo, Italy, Benin, and Burkina Faso).
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
Ensemble avec Marie was created from a Libanese inspiration and started in France for the first time in 2015 at the Longpont basilica (in the French department of Essonne) and has been spread all over France and abroad since then. In 2018, 24 gatherings are scheduled in the Maghreb and in Africa with the aim of mobilising “the heart and the intelligence”. All the gatherings organised by Ensemble avec Marie go beyond the idea of dialogue: they are “spiritual and popular meetings” between Christian and Muslim believers, around the figure of Mary.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
The proximity of the two stories of the Annunciation in the Gospel and in the Koran was the starting point of Ensemble avec Marie. It gathers Christians and Muslims from all backgrounds, who wish to build a civilisation based on Love and Peace, while respecting each other’s identity. Because the communities tend not to know each other well, people can mistrust other religions. In order to avoid these identity tensions which threaten social cohesion, only a dialogue can help go beyond fears and ignorance. They promote a brotherly community with diversity in culture and religion, respecting worship and the right to be different. The gathering in Ensemble avec Marie is spiritual; reunited around the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, Chritians and Muslims find each other in the love they share for her.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
With the tense context of the past few years in France (due to the terrorist attacks), such an organisation is very important in France. Even if France is mainly Catholic, Islam is one one the main religions in the country. It is then important for believers to urge the French population to view religion as a means of making connections between people, not as a means of dividing people. Ensemble avec Marie is a way to see common points between two religions and to avoid an inward-looking attitude.
HOW TO USE WITH THE STUDENTS
The teacher may organise practical activities about Christianism and Islam (using the practical activities of IO1) to discuss the two religions and how they have been in relation with each other in history. Then, he can lead discussions about Ensemble avec Marie and ask the students how and why such an organisation is important.

VIDEOS

  • Ensemble avec Marie
This video shows a gathering of Ensemble avec Marie in a church in 2015. Since there are a lot of Muslim songs as well as Christian songs that are being sung, we can see the interreligious nature of such a gathering.
