Maarif Caddesi 10, Edirne, Turkey

RELIGIONS Judaism

DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
The Great Synagogue was built by Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The construction started in 1907 and opened to worship in 1907. The synagogue was in use until 1983 and could accommodate 1,200 worshipers, 900 men and 300 women. French architect France Depré modeled the synagogue after the Ottoman Sephardic Synagogue in Vienna, which was later destroyed by Nazis. It was the third largest temple in Europe and the largest in Turkey and represented Moorish Revival style. It was recently renovated and opened in 2015 with a religious ceremony.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
In Edirne, the Jewish community was divided into 13 congregations, each having their own synagogue until a great fire destroyed the old part of the city. According to the records from early 16th century, Jewish congregation was divided as Alaman (German-Ashkenazic), Katalan (Catalonia), Portagal (Portugal), İspanya (Spain), Polya (Apulia), Aragon, Toledo and Gerush (meaning expulsion in Hebrew). In 1873 there were approximately 12.000 Jews living in the city. After the destruction of the synagogues one single synagogue (Grand Synangoue) was built in 1907
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
The peculiarity of Jewish faith is that a person is born as a Jew. For different reasons they do not practice any missionary work in order to gain new converts. On the other hand, the history of Jewish community is full of migration and expulsion. Major part of the Jews in the Ottoman Empire were from Iberian Peninsula and they were expelled from there in 1492 when Aragon King Ferdinand II and his wife, Queen Elisabeth of Castille united the peninsula after centuries long Muslim presence. Most of the time the Jews lived within their closed society in their private and religious life but they were quite active in commercial life. They were an integral part of the Ottoman society.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
There is no religious influence to speak of.
