DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
The church was founded in 1143 by Admiral George of Antioch, Syrian of Orthodox faith in the service of the Norman king Roger II. Built by oriental artists according to Byzantine taste, the church has a Greek cross plan, prolonged with the narthex and the atrium. In the mid-fifteenth century the church was assigned to the adjacent Benedictine monastery, of Latin rite, and this led to some internal adjustments, completed only in the seventeenth century. At the end of the nineteenth century, after some works that brought back most of the building to its original medieval appearance except for the nave and the central apse, the church fell into a state of neglect, until the return to Eastern worship in the first half of the twentieth century on behalf of the Albanian community of Sicily on concession of the Archdiocese of Palermo. The church thus assumed the parish title of San Nicolò dei Greci
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
From a historical point of view, the building has been for almost nine centuries one of the religious and cultural centres of Palermo; the church is commonly called "La Martorana", from the name of the founder of the Benedictine monastery to which it has been linked since the Middle Ages
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
The building, founded by an Orthodox, has maintained throughout the centuries the typically oriental structure, even when it has been adapted to the Latin rite of Catholic worship; noteworthy are the Islamic architectural influences, due to the Arab workers who participated in the making of the building. Today the church is assigned to the Catholic-Byzantine cult, and is also home to the "East Christian" ecumenical cultural association.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
The presence of the Greek-Albanian community, to which the church is entrusted, is very relevant for the presence of minority religious and cultural traditions in contemporary Sicily. The Greek-Albanian community, even if Catholic, follows the Byzantine rite, which is celebrated in a few other centres of worship in Europe.
