The square at Place-des-Martyrs-Juifs-du-Vélodrome-d'Hiver, also known as the promenade du quai de Grenelle - square des Martyrs-Juifs, is located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE The Winter Velodrome raid, often referred to as the "Winter Vel'd'Hiv raid" is the largest mass arrest of Jews in France during the Second World War. Between 16 and 17 July 1942, more than thirteen thousand people, nearly a third of whom were children, were arrested in Paris and the suburbs to be deported: less than a hundred will return
The square was named in memory of the Winter Velodrome roundup on July 16 and 17, 1942.
This crossroads received its name by the municipal decree of June 20, 1986, Jacques Chirac being mayor of Paris.
The square was created in 1989 and the monument was inaugurated in 1994.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE The site is open to everybody, is a square where visitors can go for a walk and see the monument that commemorates the children victims of the Second World War.
It is a historical site, but the history behind is deeply related to the hatred of the religion that is Judaism back in the 1940's.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE This square has a memorial, inaugurated on July 17, 1994. It is by sculptor Walter Spitzer and architect Mario Azagury and represents innocent civilians: children, pregnant women, the elderly, symbolizing the victims of the roundup. The base of the statue is curved, reminiscent of the track of the Winter Velodrome1. Each year, a commemorative ceremony is held on the first Sunday after July 16.
HOW TO USE WITH THE STUDENTS Direct visit or virtual visit, through Google Street you can go through the promenade and, among others, see the monument.

The monument
A monument that represents the beginning of horror, when the families rounded up are still reunited with the vel d'hiv, with the meagre effects they have been granted to maintain the illusion and that fatigue and anxiety gain.

France - The Winter Vel d'Hiv roundup, 72 years later
It is one of the darkest dates in the history of France: 72 years ago, about ten thousand Jews were arrested and locked up at the Vélodrome d'Hiver, in the heart of Paris.
On July 16 and 17, 1942, on the orders of the Nazis, the Vichy regime carried out the largest mass arrest of Jews in France during the Second World War. More than 13,000 people, including hundreds of children, are being arrested.
These men, women and children will be parked at the Vélodrome d'Hiver, in the heart of Paris, only a few metres from the Eiffel Tower, before being deported to the death camps. About a hundred of them survived.
Our journalists met Michel Muller, one of the last survivors of the Winter Vel d'Hiv raid.
