DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION The Buddhist Cultural Centre of Rennes located rue des Veyettes, in the south-eastern industrial zone, aims to meet the aspirations of the inhabitants of the Rennes basin linked to Buddhism - through culture or practice.
It is managed by the association "CENTRE CULTUREL BOUDDHIQUE DE RENNES (CCBR)" created in 2006 with the aim of bringing Buddhist culture to life and making it known and developing the Buddhist culture.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE It began in June 2004 with a letter from Dr. Sokkaing Saur to Mr. The Mayor officially requesting the creation of a Buddhist Cultural Centre. The municipality replied "make yourself available to discuss it further". From then on, a collective bringing together all the Buddhist movements present in Rennes was created.
In November 2006, after two years of exchanges on both the legal and architectural aspects in conjunction with the Town Hall, a 400-metre premises located south-east of Rennes was proposed to house the Centre.
On 15 January 2008, the Municipal Council adopted a decision establishing the principle of the creation of the Buddhist Cultural Centre of Rennes. While waiting for the building to be renovated, the next three years will be used to bring the Centre to life without the walls.
On 21 September 2011, the Day of Peace, the association "Centre Culturel Bouddhique de Rennes" is created. It brings together 6 Buddhist cultural associations: Comité Bouddhique Rennais, Drukpa Rennes, Dojo Zen de Rennes, KTT, Rigpa Rennes and the Vietnamese Buddhists of Rennes and 4 socio-cultural associations: Amis France Laos, Association des Kmers d'Ille et Vilaine, Mam Trê and Solidarité Bretagne Cambodge et des personnes physiques, On 1 December 2011, the Centre Culturel Buddhhique will be located within its walls.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE Buddhism appeared in India in the 5th century BC and then spread to Asia. In the West and particularly in France, it has been present for about sixty years. In recent years, the number of Buddhists in France has grown rapidly, to around 1 million today with a majority of people of Asian origin, particularly from South East Asia. In the face of the crisis in our society, many women and men are seeking spirituality. Buddhism is seduced by its universal values, among which I will mention wisdom, compassion, peace, freedom and solidarity.
Whenever Buddhism has encountered another culture, it has adapted to local mentalities without compromising its fundamental values. Buddhist values, for example, are adapted to the republican motto Freedom, equality, fraternity:
Freedom: by freeing oneself from one's own attachments, everyone can gain inner freedom
Equality: with interdependence all Men are equal, it is the opposite of individualism
Fraternity: it is compassion, that is, sharing in the sufferings, joys and lives of others.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE Our Buddhist Cultural Centre carries its values. We see this centre as a real space for intercultural and intergenerational exchange and dialogue in a spirit of tolerance and respect, without proselytism or communitarianism.
The Board of Directors' project is structured around three areas:
Cultural with the discovery of Buddhist culture countries
Spiritual with an openness to meditation, with conferences and teachings
Citizen with active participation in Rennes life
Today, I have one wish: that this Centre be a real bridge between Western culture and Buddhist culture. I invite all the people of Rennes to cross this bridge to discover another culture.
