8. ESSENTIAL GLOSSARY
  • Bishop
    A bishop is a clergyman of high rank in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox churches.
  • Canon law
    the law of the Christian church. It has authority only for that church and its members.
  • Congregation
    The people who are attending a church service or who regularly attend a church service are referred to as the congregation.
  • Denomination
    A particular denomination is a particular religious group which has slightly different beliefs from other groups within the same faith.
  • House of Lords
    The House of Lords is the part of the parliament in Britain whose members have not been elected. The building where they meet is also called the House of Lords.
  • Icon
    an icon is a picture of the Christ, his mother, or a saint painted on a wooden panel.
  • Ideology
    An ideology is a set of beliefs, especially the political beliefs on which people, parties, or countries base their actions.
  • Nasheeds/nashids
    Muslim religious songs. Those songs are called ilahi in Turkey, nasyiden in Malaysia and Indonesia, ilahija in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and naat in Pakistan and India.
  • Shaman
    Among some Native American peoples, a shaman is a person who is believed to have powers to heal sick people or to remove evil spirits from them.
  • Theology
    it is the study of the nature of God and of religion and religious beliefs.
