DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION The Tomb of Kademli Baba Sultan or Moussa Choban is located at Mount Saint Iliya. It combines elements of pagan, Christian and Muslim cultures. The legendary Moussa Choban was a Cossack slave, who converted to Islam. He became a famous holy man, faith healer and miracle worker. The characteristic ney flute of the mystic symbolizes that he is God chosen, spiritual preceptor and holder of supreme secret knowledge.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE Kademli Baba Sultan was one of the first spiritual leaders in the Bulgarian lands to preach reconciliation between Christians and Muslims. The mausoleum commemorates the legacy of the saint and marks the place where he began his teachings.
According to Demir Baba’s Vilayetname (Life story), Kademli Baba Sultan foresaw the birth of the saint and helped bring his parents together. Kademli Baba supposedly received his dervish garments from the Alevi saint Haji Bektash Veli. When Kademli died, Sultan
Mehmed Çelebi commissioned the building of a religious complex. Today, only the tomb survives. In the 1930s, the iron crescent from the dome was replaced with a cross.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE Alevi pilgrims visit the tomb throughout the year. A large feast is held annually on the day of Hıdırellez, marking the beginning of spring and the rebirth of nature. Sacrifices are made, and rituals for health and fertility are performed.
Christians associate the shrine with Holy Prophet Elijah and visit it on his holiday.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE In the folklore and religious practices of the local Alevi muslims, Kademli Baba is syncretized with al-Khiḍr. The later is one of the two saints celebrated on Hıdırellez. The other one is Elijah, venerated by Muslims, christians and jews.
At the eclectic shrine, one can find Islamic inscriptions, Orthodox Icons, candelabra and gifts left by the visitors.
HOW TO USE WITH THE STUDENTS - Direct visit: Currently the mausoleum is in poor condition.
- Virtual visit: See the photo galleries in the media resources section.
- Classroom activity (post-visit): Examine the shared values and syncretic spiritual practices of diverse religious communities as a basis for tolerance and interfaith dialogue.
