Hizir Baba Türbe

Hizir Baba Türbe

Gorna Krepost, Bulgaria

RELIGIONS Islam

DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
This is the resting place of Hizir Baba - spiritual teacher and sage believed to be the first one to preach Islam in this land. It is situated at the foot of Perperikon, at the eastern end of the village of Gorna Krepost. The mausoleum is small heptagonal building with a doorway and a single window. It has been reconstructed in 1939. The interior is decorated eclectically - featuring inscriptions in Arabic, Latin and Cyrilic scrips, floral ornamentations and decorative carvings. Pictures of Alevi saints hang on the walls. The sarcophagus is covered with gifts and flowers. There is also a hostel (imaret) next to the türbe.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
According to folk tales, Hizir Baba was a tall man with a beard long to the waist. This is why his grave is more than 5 meters long. He is believed to have died at the place where he was buried. The name of Hizir means green, vegetation. He is honored as protector of the travelers, keeping them out of trouble and helping them when needed. In folk memory, the saint is connected to the era of Ottoman conquest, despite the fact that his tomb was built much later. Hizir Baba was leading the siege of the nearby fortress. The fierce fights went on for days. The hero heard children and women crying for mercy at the camp of the enemy. He was moved and ordered the soldiers to spare the lives of the captured people. Hizir Baba supposedly was killed in this battle. The mausoleum marks the place where he fell.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
In the village, there is also a mosque built according to Sharia canon in 1836. The two local confessional groups - Sunni and Shiite - participate in the annual celebration of Hizir Baba and pay hommage to the saint at his türbe. They both make qurban sacrificial offerings, bring gifts and arrange shared meals. While the Alevites are the symbolic hosts of the feast, everybody helps for its preparation.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
The religious festival starts with group visits to the Türbe and solemn prayers for health and salvation. Traditionally, the Mavlidia is read every year. In contrast to the customs of other Muslim communities, there are no ritual dances. These meetings are also a traditional venue for familial, friendly and inter-communal meetings, and in recent times also a gathering of the inhabitants of the surrounding villages and towns.
