DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION The Stupa is a Buddhist monument that reminds sentient beings of the perfect nature of mind which is inherent to all. The Enlightenment Stupa symbolizes the moment when Buddha reached Enlightenment – the nature of fully awakened mind.
It is situated at Retreat Center Plana, on a plateau in Plana Mountain. The beautiful view reveals the mountains Vitosha, Rila and Verila.
The location of the Enlightenment Stupa was chosen by Lama Ole Nydahl. He explains that people living in the capital of Sofia need peaceful and easily accessible natural places in order to perfect their meditation practice.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE Stupa Sofia was built at Retreat Center Plana in the summer of 2015 by Diamond Way Buddhism practitioners.
Hundreds of people from all over the world participated in the building of the stupa. All worked as volunteers and the funds for the materials were collected from donations.
Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche and Lama Ole inaugurated the Stupa with a ceremony on 14 August 2015.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE While Buddhism has relatively few followers in Bulgaria, they are generally well accepted by the society. In recent years, there is a growing interest in public lectures and Buddhist literature. Many books by the Dalai Lama are translated in Bulgarian and are enjoyed by a wide audience. Many people interested in esoteric knowledge, mindfulness and spirituality are inclined to attend Buddhist retreats.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE It is believed that the spiritual energy of the stupas brings peace and love to people and the planet. According to the Buddhist tradition, stupas bring happiness, fulfill the wishes of people with good intentions and protect the world from calamities and conflicts.
The Enlightment stupa is revered by followers of Vajrayana Buddhism. Their spiritual practices include the use of mantras, dharanis, mudras, mandalas and the visualization of deities and Buddhas.
