DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
The Islamic Cultural Centre has many objectives and roles as it is involved in the religious, cultural and social life of London and the UK. Chief among them is to promulgate the true meaning and understanding of Islam as a Religion of Peace, Tolerance and Coexistence, and hence the framework of all aspects of our work stems from this standpoint. We aim to employ our services and expertise for the benefit of the whole community. We support the distribution of the Holy Quran in 30 languages and provide registrar services, educational courses in Arabic Language, Religious Studies in English, Arabic, and Persian with students of all ages. In this, as in all that we do, we aim to reach the highest possible standards of delivery.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
Between 1900 - 1930 Several efforts were made to build a mosque in Central London, including one initiated by Lord Headley. In1940 the British Government was persuaded to present a site in London to the Muslim Community of Great Britain. It was in fact the Churchill war cabinet which authorized the acquisition of a site to build a mosque in London on 24 October 1940. It was not however, until 1974 that construction of a purpose built mosque began. The present building is based on a design by Sir Frederick Gibberd, selected in 1973 from many others in an international competition.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
Understanding itself as the final revelation of the Abrahamic tradition, the centre values the history and experiences of The Jewish and Christian faiths, recognising the Divine sources of these great religions and honouring the Prophets Moses and Jesus, Peace be upon them. Much of our scripture encourages us to reflect on stories also found in the Torah and Gospels and calls us to remember the Unity of God though the concept of tawheed. We are engaged in different Interfaith activities in this tradition, and welcome those looking to be involved to register their interest. The Centre also has an interfaith department which collaborates with more than 30 organisations, with regular dialogues and interfaith scriptural reasoning events to promote peace, interconnectedness and coexistence in society.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
The Islamic Center has an exhibition, the first of its kind to be built in the United Kingdom, which occupies over 60 meters of wall space and provides visitors with a visual journey through the Islamic faith. The wall based exhibition spans across two of the basement halls and incorporates video screens, models and posters to provide a multidimensional viewing experience for visitors. The exhibition aims to provide a greater understanding of the universal message of Islam, thereby encouraging meaningful and positive dialogue and promoting greater community understanding and harmony.
