DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
Kumbet Mosque was an Armenian Church in 10th century. also it is said to be that the chourch is made by christian Kipchak Turks. Now it is used as a mosque. It is very near to the castle of Kars . The structure originally is centrally planned and has a right-angled space with four niches, resembling four clovers of leaf. In the architecture of the Kümbet Mosque, basalt stone, a volcanic stone type, was removed from the skirts of Ağrı Mountain. This old place of worship, also known as the Kars Museum, continued its function until 1981.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
The Havariler Church, located on the south side of Kars Castle, is one of the Armenian churches in the city. It was built by King Abbas in the period of Bagrat Kingdom. It was built between 932-937. The church is centrally planned and has a right-angled space with four niches, resembling four clovers of leaf. Later, in 1064, this church in the province, which had been dominated by Muslims, was transformed into a monument and named as Kümbet Mosque. When the region became Russian dominated, the mosque was transformed into the Russian Orthodox Church, and when it entered the Turkish domination in 1918, it was revived. In 1964, it was converted into a museum and the historical monuments obtained from the excavations in Kars started to be exhibited here.. Since 1993 it has been used as a mosque again.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
Kars is an eastern city of Turkey near to Armenia and Georgia. There are many historical and religious sites in the city. Ancient human religions and old Christian traditions can be examined in the structures. The area changes by wars migrations of populations.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
Kars today has a Muslim majority and the structure is used as a mosque which is an outcome of the separation of people of other religions. It has been discussed for a while, to convert the mosque into a museum.
HOW TO USE WITH THE STUDENTS
Kars is an eastern city quite far from the capital cities of Turkey. The city can be reached by plane, bus or train. The city is in a cold climate, in winter months the city seems very nice under the snow but it might be better to visit the place with the students in other months.
