DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION Mains ouvertes is a group created in the Lyon Part Dieu neighborhood of Lyon, that is very known in the city for having been a residence, for a long time of an important interreligious community made by Christians, Muslims and Jews. The association has its premises in the shopping center of La Part Dieu, in which everyone can discuss to the members of the association. Furthemore, there is a reading corner with books available for everyone as well as an interfaith space for prayer.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE La Part Dieu neighborhood of Lyon is known for being very multiethnic and its inhabitants worship different religions and communities. The group was born by the law of 1901 with the collaboration of the representative organizations of the three religions to start a collaboration and to confirm the communities’ long history of coexistence. Since the creation of the commercial center of Lyon in 1975, the association is installed in its premises open to all.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE The association Mains Ouvertes has been created with the intention of reuniting the three main monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) in different activities that can help in the process of coexistence. Most of these activities can be classified as meetings between the affiliates, and the political representatives, also common readings of the fundamental religious texts, discussions on the main issues of the three religions, dwelling with the common principals and also with the differences between them.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE Mains Ouvertes is an interfaith association, no one of the religions is considered leader in the group and influence the others. The base of the cooperation is that all the three religions are considered at the same level and no one overrides the others.
HOW TO USE WITH THE STUDENTS The students would participate in a visit of the group’s site and also to the several events created by the association Mains Ouvertes, like lectures of the holy books, discussions on the religions behaviors, their similarities and differences, meetings with the different people that are part of the group.
