Villa Bottini, Via Elisa, Lucca

DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION Agresti-Maselli ecumenical center is a center for dialogue and debate between believers of different religions and laity. A reality strongly enhanced by the City of Lucca, the Archdiocese of Lucca and the Waldensian church.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE The entitlement of the centre after two very important figures for the Lucchese society is something that roots this centre in the name of a friendship: that between Archbishop Giuliano Agresti (1921- 1990) and the Waldensian pastor Domenico Maselli (1933-2016) who, together, began an ecumenical journey in Lucca. There are still no details on when this Ecumenical Center will be inaugurated. At the moment it is known that it will have its own statute and its organs, but also that in addition to fostering the dialogue and the fraternal relationship between Christians belonging to different Churches, it will be a meeting place also for members of different religions, between believers and non-believers, among people. One of the supporters of this Center will be the Municipality of Lucca and the Province of Lucca. Therefore, the intuition of the pastor Domenico Maselli is growing more and more, as he wished to reawaken in the city of Lucca the international affluence inherited from his history, from the relationship and the dialogue with the different cities of Europe and the world, with particular memory of the close relationship between Lucca and Geneva at the beginning of the seventeenth century. An intuition therefore that, having become a cultivated hope for almost two years, is now finally becoming a reality.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE The relevance of this centre lies in the research of a dialogue, the connection between different religions, the promotion of knowledge and meditation about religions.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE The centre is connected with the Christian community of Protestant area belonging to the Union of Waldensian and Methodist Churches.
The Valdese Church of Lucca was opened in via Galli Tassi 50 in 1864.
It is a small but active and very united community. Like all the reformed churches, there is no distinction between clergy and laity because what really counts is the universal priesthood of believers and the belief that any honest work, done to the glory of God, is an act of worship. The Community is managed by the Assembly (which decides on each activity) and by the Council (with executive and coordination functions). It has excellent relationships with all the Christian churches in the city.
