DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION The Basilica of St. John is Selçuk (İzmir), the modern town located where the medieval Ephesus was. Located on a hill in the vicinity of a medieval fortification, when still standing should have given an impressive view to the visitors.
It was constructed during the reign of Justinian I between 548 and 565.
Having a cross shape, the basilica was covered with domes and built over the tomb of St. John the Evangelist. There are two narthexes in the western part leading to the main nave flanked by two aisles. The domes covering the roof were resting on massive piers. There are the remains of baptistery and octagonal skeuophylakion (or sacristy).
Even it is a ruined basilica being recently restored, one can still feel the immense volume of the structure.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE Ephesus, being one of The Seven Churches of the Revelation, was an important center during the Apostolic Era and Early Christianity. The tomb of St. John the Evangalist is also in Ephesus on which Justinian I built a grandiose church in early 6th century.
The name on which the church is located is “Aya Suluk”, a name derived from Hagia Theologou, holy theologian, the name given to St. John. Medieval Ephesus was an important religious and trade center where flocks of pilgrims dared to travel under the poor conditions of travelling especially to visit the crypt of St. John, which was believed to have a potent for miracles.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE There is no inter-religious relevance to speak of.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE The presence of the tomb of St. John in Selçuk is used to justify the presence of House of Virgin Mary, where she is believed to have spent her last years and died. Compared to the House of Virgin Mary, the church has of no importance for religious purposes for local Muslims.
