DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
This is the oldest Mevlevihane (lodge for Mevlevi dervishes) in İstanbul. It was built in 1491. It was built as a complex consisting of semahane (place where the dervishes perform sema, the ritual of which whirling forms the core), cells for dervishes, lodge for the Sheikh (the head of the complex), imperial lodge, library, muvakkithane (office where the time is measured), kitchen and tombs etc. The complex went under restoration and reconstruction several times. The main building is octagonal shape and is a fine example of 18th century Baroque style that was fashionable in the Ottoman Empire then.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
Mevlevis (dervishes following the teachings of Mevlana Jalal-ud-Din Rumi, they are also called as whirling dervishes). He was a theologian and poet (b. 30 September 1207, Belh – d. 17 December 1273, Konya). Whirling dervishes are the most famous Sufi order globally due to highly aesthetical ritual of whirling accompanied by music. The humanist philosophy of Mevlana still attracts many people of different faith. Due to his universal value, United Nations declared 2007 as the Year of Mevlana. Today the museum as well as sema performances carried out on regular base calls attention both the locals and the foreign visitors.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
Being translated into many languages, the books and philosophy of Mevlana still spreads his words in the world. His famous saying “Come, come whatever you are, It doesn't matter whether you are an infidel, an idolater or a fire-worshiper, Come, our convent is not a place of despair. Come, even if you violated your swear a hundred times, come again.” Is actually can be taken an universal invitation to love in the spiritual sense.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
As it is read in the article of BBC, he is now the best selling poet in the US. We cannot call it the influence of Islam but rather his mystic thoughts combining the text with music and sort of dance.
HOW TO USE WITH THE STUDENTS
Please describe the didactical relevance and the proposed way to use with the students:
- Direct visit
If possible, a direct visit would be of most value.
- Virtual visit (specify how)
A virtual visit by PPP prepared by the teacher. A video of the whirling dervishes must be included.
- Classroom activity (pre- and post- visit)
A pre-visit research: Mystic movements in Semitic religions.

- Post-visit discussion: The role of mystic movements in the daily life of a society.
