DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION Surp Kevork is an Armenian Apostolic Church dedicated to St. George the Victorious. It is the only such church with side wards apart from the central ship: one for women and another for men.
A vast courtyard surrounds the church complex. In the past, its yard was designed as a cemetery for prominent Armenians from the community, as well as priests and prelates, who had died here.. A marble sarcophagus of a high priest is preserved to this day.
The Armenian church complex, house of culture, school and community center form a center of the cultural life of Armenians in this diverse city.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE Surp Kevork Church was originally an Eastern Orthodox Church, dedicated to St. George, the Victorious. In 1149, the distinguished bishop Albertis of Aras was buried in the courtyard of the church with honors, sent by a special mission by the French King Louis VII in the yard of the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnin in Constantinople during the Second Crusade (1143-1180).
In 1767 the church was ceded to the Plovdiv Armenian Diocese.
In 1920-1922, Armenian refugees banished by the Turkish government as a result of the 1915 genocide and the Greek-Turkish war brought their faith and saved the ancient urns from desecration from the temples in Rodosto, Malgara, Chorlu, Edirne. Many settled in Plovdiv. Today some of these priceless objects are arranged in the museum exhibition in the crypt of the church. It was opened for the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as state religion in Armenia. Multiple table and pectoral crosses, reliquaries, chalices, handwritten bibles, service books and others are stored here.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE The Armenians in Bulgaria are an extremely sustainable community that has preserved its religion and cultural identity. At the same time, they are fully integrated into Bulgarian society and participate actively in all spheres of public life.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE The Armenian Apostolic Church one of the oldest Christian religious institutions. Christianity was brought to Armenia by the Apostles Bartholomew and Tadei, which is why the church is called Apostolic.
