DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
The Holy Mother of God chapel is an Armenian Apostolic church still under construction. It is build at the site of a 17th century Apostolic church that was destroyed during early 20th century war years. In 1936 the Armenian community house was opened, which houses the Armenian church today. The construction of the new temple began in 2006. At the beginning of 2019, it is nearly completed and awaiting consecration.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
Testimonies of the Armenian settlers in Bulgaria date back to the 5th century CE. Historical sources speak of Orthodox Armenians who helped establish the Bachkovo Monastery in the year 1083. Travel logs of diplomats and clergymen from late 17th century document the existence of of Armenian chapels and wooden churches built around the city of Burgas.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
The Armenians in Bulgaria are an extremely sustainable community that has preserved its religion and cultural identity. At the same time, they are fully integrated into Bulgarian society and participate actively in all spheres of public life. The Armenian Apostolic Church one of the oldest Christian religious institutions. Christianity was brought to Armenia by the Apostles Bartholomew and Tadei, which is why the church is called Apostolic.

The Armenian church celebrates five great church feasts (Dahaviri) during the year: Christmas, Easter, Transfiguration of the Lord, Assumption of the Virgin and Pentecost.
