DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
The church was built in 1484 by Giovanni Cruyllas II, in the late-Gothic style. It takes its current name from the cult of the SS. Crucifix to which was dedicated the wooden crucifix by Giovanni Salvo d'Antonio, today at the high altar of the Church Maria SS. Annunziata. However, it is better known as the Church of San Filippo both because it preserves the ancient simulacrum of the Holy Syrian, placed there during the domination of Ferdinando Gravina, and because it is the starting point of the traditional "Calata" (“precipitous descent”). It is a rectangular-shaped building, with the semicircular sacristy at a lower altitude, since it was built on the eastern slope of the hill, declining towards the Alcantara Valley. Entering the church, on the left, there is a small chapel, on whose wall you can see traces of a fresco depicting the Madonna della Catena, a copy of that of Antonello di Saliba. In a niche decorated with arches, where today is placed the statue of St. Philip the Syrian, there was once the statue of St. Catherine of Alexandria, currently visible in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, where it was placed in 1875. On the north side of the church a beautiful square-shaped bell tower built in regular limestone and lava stone blocks can be admired.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
For centuries the church has represented the religious centre of the city of Calatabiano, seat of a popular cult deeply rooted for San Filippo the Syrian, who would have lived and preached in Calatabiano towards the end of the first century. A.D. From a historical point of view, San Filippo is certainly of Middle Eastern origin, probably coming from Thrace and not from Syria.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
The figure of St. Philip the Syrian, also venerated as St. Philip of Agira, is very relevant also for the Orthodox Church, which venerates him as a thaumaturge.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
The building is a centre of worship for the whole territory and the provinces of Catania and Messina, with particularly important folk events held every year in the month of May, with a spectacular procession of the statue of St. Philip
