DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
Opened in 2019 the new Cambridge Central Mosque is a groundbreaking prayer space and community hub for the diverse Muslim residents of Cambridge, as well as international visitors. It is only 15 minutes on foot from the train station or 8 minutes by bike from the city centre, while the Citi 2 bus takes 13 minutes from Emmanuel Street and stops right outside, at Vinery Road.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
The Cambridge Central Mosque design was inspired both by Islamic and English religious architectural traditions. Above all, it sought to develop the idea of a British mosque for the 21st century. More than ten years of dedicated work has resulted in a pioneering mosque, one that seems to have grown organically out of the landscape and celebrates our shared love of beauty.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
The Cambridge Central Mosque welcomes everyone regardless of background or faith, its gardens and cafeteria are open to visitors during opening hours throughout the year.
The Cambridge Central Mosque design was inspired by both Islamic and English religious architectural traditions. The Islamic garden at the front of the mosque is open to everyone, and provides a quiet transition from the city to the prayer space, as well as a taste of Jannat al-Firdaws, the Paradise Gardens described in the Qur’an. There is also the Community Garden on Mill Road outside the Mosque boundary, open to the public.
