DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION The Pagode du Bois de Vincennes is the seat of the Institut International Bouddhique founded by Jean Sainteny who was the manager of the Institute. It is located in a former building of the colonial exposition of the year 1931, designed by the architect Louis-Hippolyte Boileau. It is used by Buddhist schools of the Parisian region and has not any religious leader. The Pagoda is a place of common worship; it shelters the biggest Buddha of Europe, covered with gold leaf and measuring, including its seat, more than 9 meters high. The Pagoda hosts relics of the historical Buddha since 2008.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE The Pagoda of Vincennes has an important historical relevance because, as it was specified before it is located in a building of the colonial exposition of 1931, and it occupies the former house of Cameroon that it was restored already in 1977 to be transformed in pagoda. It shows the presence of Buddhism in France since several years and its history of coexistence in the country.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE The Union of Buddhists in France that generally uses the Pagoda of Vincennes as place of worship, demonstrated in its history in the country to be very involved in the interreligious dialogue with the other communities of Paris. The Pagoda is opened to the public for visits not regarding of their religious affiliation, and the Buddhist community organized several times meeting with other religious leaders, one of the most important was in 2016 and it was particularly relevant for the presence of the Dalai Lama, the major charge in the Buddhist community
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE The Pagoda is very important for the Buddhist community, being not only a place of worship but also organizing several events regarding both religion and other thematics, to keep unit the Buddhist devouts.It also organizes meetings and discussions about their religion, its principles and which kind of role it needs to have in the modern society.
HOW TO USE WITH THE STUDENTS The students could enjoy visits of the Pagoda and admire its particularity in the French scenario, they also could participate to the several events organized by the Buddhist community both regarding Buddhism and interfaith collaborations
