DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION
Abraham Duchère is a group created in the Duchère neighborhood of Lyon, that is very known in the city for having been a residence, for a long time of an important interreligious community made by Christians, Muslims and Jews. For this reason, the name of the group was chosen because Abraham is the first and common prophet for all the three monotheistic religions.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
La Duchère neighborhood of Lyon is known for being very multiethnic and its inhabitants worship different religions.
It is also classified as “zone de sécurité prioritaire” because of the quite high level of crime and insecurity in the area.
The group was born with the collaboration of the representative organizations of the three religions to start a collaboration (which existed since the 1960s) and to confirm the communities’ long history of coexistence.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
The group Abraham Duchére has been created with the intention of reuniting the three main monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) in different activities that can help in the process of coexistence in a difficult area, but a various one in terms of ethnicities, such as La Duchére.
Most of these activities can be classified as meetings between the affiliates, also common readings of the fundamental religious texts, discussions on the main issues of the three religions, dwelling with the common principals and also with the differences between them.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
Being the Group Abraham Duchére an interfaith association, no one of the religions is considered leader in the group and influence the others. The base of the cooperation is that all the three religions are considered at the same level and no one overrides the others.
HOW TO USE WITH THE STUDENTS
The students would participate in a visit of the group’s site and also to the several events created by Abraham Duchére, like lectures of the holy books, discussions on the religions behaviors, their similarities and differences, meetings with the different people that are part of the group.
