Introduction

1.2 What does the course provide?
The starting point is the Celebrations, followed by the ensuing ceremonies, or festivities, (Ceremonies). The presentation, even from a historical point of view, of these two starting points is then linked to the concept of "Dietary rules", that is, those practices related to the feeding regime, to the rules of feeding and / or fasting observed in each religious context and, in some cases, even quite similar in the different calendars.

Each section of the course presents a short introduction to the content, for each of the main religions. In the introduction it is possible to find a presentation of the sections (celebrations, ceremonies and dietary rules), in order to understand the choice which has been made (Why has this celebration been chosen? How is it connected to the ceremonies and dietary rules?)

In the course, teachers will be able to find historical-religious references, liturgical references and the development of food practices within the community, accompanied by appropriate references (websites, images, links to videos and the like).

Starting from the above-mentioned chapters – well-structured in the respective sections - the course developed by the different partners will highlight some aspects to be expanded especially in the educational practice, starting from the comparison between the different religions regarding ceremonies, celebrations and dietary rules.

In particular, the following aspects have to be highlighted:
  • The name of the festivities and the related celebrations, the liturgical aspects, the connections and the relationships among the various confessions – where/if they can be traced.
  • The role that food choices and priorities takes on within these different celebrations (fasting, prohibition of foods, abstention from particular drinks).
  • The most significant aspects and the common traits that can be found among different religions, or even within the same (think about Eastern Catholicism and the different meanings and practices it assumes).
