DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION The Centre exists to promote mutual understanding between people of different faiths/beliefs and none and to build respect between people as fellow human beings across cultures.
The Centre is a shared space where people are invited to speak freely and fearlessly in the spirit of ‘Listen to others as you want them to listen to you.’
The original idea emerged from the grassroots in a group drawn from the local Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh communities alongside the University of Derby. The Design Brief and fundraising were achievements of inter-faith dialogue.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE On Wednesday 24th November 1999, the Mayor of Derby, Councillor Sara Bolton, clicked a computer-mouse at the Official Launch of the Fund-Raising Campaign, triggering a display in the hall at the University of Derby and on www.multifaithnet.org. Mark Swindells’ design for the Centre zoomed out from a Planet Earth wreathed in circling religious symbols, to the strains of Richard Strauss’ Sunrise Fanfare, beloved of fans of the film “2001”.

RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE The Centre is working strategically, developing links to regional and national projects. It has a significant stake in capacity building in the city of Derby and elsewhere, and continues to work with groups who are often seen as on the margins of society.
Its local inter-faith collaboration and project work includes working with statutory and community and voluntary sector agencies and organisations and working towards establishing greater links with the private sector.
The Multi-Faith Centre has broad support which is continuing to grow, and works closely with the University of Derby in providing a number of links between Higher Education and the wider academic world. This includes links to the community whose involvement is part of an inclusive project of learning through skills developed out of greater understanding.
