DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE
DESCRIPTION The Interreligious Museum was officially founded in 2005 following the Mediterranean interuniversity agreement, signed in 1995 among the universities of Bologna, Thessalonica, Tunis, Ankara, Heidelberg, Jerusalem, the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Antonianum University.
The Museum is located inside the oldest parts of the Rocca Vescovile di Bertinoro: the dungeons and the cistern dating back to the 12th century.
The exhibition itinerary is divided into 15 rooms and is divided into three sections. The first section is dedicated to common and shared aspects among Jews, Christians and Muslims. The second section is monographic and addresses the historical developments that led the monotheistic religions to create and enrich their specific identities. The third section is dedicated to the experiences that led to the definition of the heritage of values that characterizes Monotheism. Values and experiences still today of primary importance in the life of believers and non-believers, called to build good together in civic life.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE The history of the Fortress begins at the end of the X Century.
Thanks to its strategic location the Fortress was not only used for military purposes. From the late XV Century, the Malatesta family and the bishops of Bertinoro turned the Fortress into a cultural hub. Domenico Novello Malatesta moved here part of what then became the world-famous San Francesco library (currently in Cesena). Subsequently the bishops, according to the decisions made during the Council of Trent, used the Fortress as a place to promote education and culture.
In 1986 the Rocca ended its function as a bishop's palace and in 1994 began its activity the University Residential Center (Ce.U.B.) which organizes international courses of Higher Education. In 1997 he was given a loan for use at the University of Bologna.
In the context of the Ce.U.B., in 2005, the Interreligious Museum was founded.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE The Interreligious Museum of Bertinoro was created to meet the need to create a space where monotheistic cultures and religions could meet, get to know each other and dialogue, combining the value of tolerance and respect.
For this reason the Museum is dedicated to the three great monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), which deeply marked the history, the events and the identity of the peoples of the Mediterranean and the world.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE Important scholars (theologians, architects and artists) of the three monotheistic faiths, internationally renowned, have worked together to trace exhibition routes, to allow the acquisition of important art objects and the creation of the great entrance portal to the Museum, a work of art in metal by Mario Di Cicco. This door represents the ideal introduction to the museum's cultural itinerary, presenting the symbols of the three monotheistic religions and 18 iconographic themes, among the most significant and emblematic, of the same.
