DESCRIPTION OF THE RELIGIOUS SITE

DESCRIPTION
There has been a church on this site in St Davids, Pembrokeshire since the 6th century. The Cathedral was founded by St David. Alongside the daily services, the Cathedral welcomes visitors and pilgrims running regular tours and events and refreshments in The Refectory. The cathedral's Education & Pilgrimage Centre, Tŷ’r Pererin, was officially opened by the Bishop of St Davids on Monday 4 March 2013. The purpose of the centre is to offer extended hospitality to visitors to the cathedral, with particular emphasis on educational and spiritual activities around the Shrine of St David and pilgrimage.
HISTORICAL RELEVANCE
Beginning life as a monastery started by St David in the 6th century the cathedral has been through many tempestuous and destructive periods. William the Conqueror visited St David's in 1081 to pray. The current Cathedral was started in 1181 but the tower collapsed and the building was further damaged by an earthquake in the 13th century. Further restorations have taken place throughout the 20th century and the British Government decided to reinstate the title of "city" to St Davids and this was formally conferred by Queen Elizabeth II on 1 June 1995.
INTER-RELIGIOUS RELEVANCE
The Cathedral offers space and opportunity for many to reflect on their pilgrimage through life. The most important ministry being the ministry of welcome and to offer a space to pray, to reflect, to rest from the journey. The Cathedral has Pilgrim packages for various groups, parishes, schools and individuals.
RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE
There are at least three services said or sung per day, each week, with sung services on five out of seven days. The cathedral choir at St Davids was the first cathedral choir in the United Kingdom to use girls and men as the main choir, rather than boys and men.[4] (Salisbury Cathedral introduced boys and girls earlier on an equal basis, whereas St Davids uses girls as their "main" cathedral choristers.) There is also a boys' choir whose weekly Evensong is a major event within the cathedral week. They sing with the vicars choral regularly. The St Davids Cathedral Festival runs through the Whitsun school holiday each year and showcases some of the world's best performers. The week sees performers, both professional and young, play in front of thousands. The cathedral choir serve as a highlight each year, being a very popular concert, as well as the Festival Chorus and Orchestra who perform a major work on the final night of the festival. The Cathedral provides a venue for artistic and creative exhibitions and gives space for organizations such as Christian Aid and Amnesty International to raise awareness of their vital work.
